Helen Maguire Newman is a photographer currently focusing on combining photography and digital drawings together. Helen uses vibrant colors and hard lines to create a sense of dynamism and energy in her work. Born in Guatemala City and raised North West of Boston Massachusetts, she is currently located in the North Shore area of Massachusetts where she attended Montserrat College of Art. Helen studied photography and art education, and hopes to study either art therapy or art education while in graduate school. She received her BFA in Photography and Art Education from Montserrat College of Art in May of 2023.
Her studio work explores multiple mediums; her primary mediums to work in are Digital and Film Photography, and Digital Drawing. Helen’s artwork consists of still lives and portraits with a focus on her experiences living with Mental Health Problems and a Learning Disability. Helen strives to capture the experiences she has had through her pieces. Much of her work represents moments in her life in which she was struggling alone and in silence. With her work having personal meaning to her inner struggles, she feels it’s vital for her to pass along the message to others who might also be struggling. She aims to visually represent things society does not find acceptable to talk about, hoping that those who are also struggling realize that they are not alone and this too shall pass.
